We had to fly back to Singapore to catch a standby flight in order to get home. So, the day we left Bangkok to go back to Singapore I was scrambling to find a hotel. I was hoping to stay at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/7879036\/type\/dlg\/https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/Singapore-Hotels-Fairmont-Singapore.h861823.Hotel-Information?chkin=4%2F22%2F2017&amp;chkout=4%2F23%2F2017&amp;rfrr=TG.Destinations.POI.TB.2.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fairmont Singapore <\/a>again, but they were booked. (That&#8217;s what I get for always being a last-minute planner.) We eventually booked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/7879036\/type\/dlg\/https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/Singapore-Hotels-Hotel-Clover-33-Jalan-Sultan.h8965214.Hotel-Information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hotel Clover 33.<\/a>&nbsp;They have rooms that can sleep 4 people. We stayed in one of their family rooms, which happens to be a loft room. It cost me right around $200 a night. Unfortunately, Singapore is an expensive place to visit.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/7879036\/type\/dlg\/https:\/\/www.travelocity.com\/Singapore-Hotels-Hotel-Clover-33-Jalan-Sultan.h8965214.Hotel-Information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/8965214_31_z.jpg\" alt=\"Hotel Clover 33 in Singapore\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/8965214_31_z.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/8965214_31_z-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/8965214_31_z-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/8965214_31_z-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to be able to leave your kids at the hotel and go grab a drink in this area&nbsp;then this would be a good place to stay. If you needed to, you could be back at the hotel within a 5-10 minute walk. We decided to walk around and see if we could find somewhere to eat. Basically, as soon as you walk around the corner from the hotel you are in the Arab district.<\/p>\n<p>From most of the area you can see the Sultan Mosque. All around the mosque are shops, restaurants, and bars. We found a tasty Lebanese restaurant to go to. There are many Lebanese restaurants to choose from. I think we could have picked a better one so I am not going to bother sharing the one we went to. There were lots of people hanging out having a drink. The building with the elaborately painted wall is a Mexican food restaurant. Hanging out here at night and having a drink is one of my most favorite things to do at night in Singapore.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9470.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9227 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9470.jpg\" alt=\"Arab quarter in Singapore\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9470.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9470-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9470-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9470-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What is your favorite thing to do in Singapore?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Kampong Glam<\/b>&nbsp;aka the Arab District is a neighborhood in Singapore, located north of the&nbsp;Singapore River.<\/p>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.viator.com\/orion\/partner\/widget.js\"><\/script><br \/>\nPrior to colonization by the British in 1819, this area was home to the Malay aristocracy of Singapore. It became prominent and more populous after the signing of a treaty between the British East India Company, Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor and Temenggong Abdul Rahman in 1819. In this treaty the company was given the right to set up a trading post in Singapore.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9427-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9226 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9427-1.jpg\" alt=\"Arab quarter in Singapore\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9427-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9427-1-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9427-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9427-1-300x400.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Later in 1822 under the&nbsp;Raffles Plan,&nbsp; the settlement was divided according to different&nbsp;ethnic&nbsp;groups which included European Town, Chinese,&nbsp;<i>Chulia<\/i>,&nbsp;Arab&nbsp;and Bugis&nbsp;kampongs. Kampong Glam was designated for the Sultan and his household, as well as the&nbsp;Malay&nbsp;and&nbsp;Arab&nbsp;communities.<\/p>\n<p><em><br class=\"Apple-interchange-newline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9429 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9648.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"711\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9648.png 683w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9648-600x900.png 600w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9648-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/www.mommytravels.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/img_9648-300x450.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sultan Hussein, his family and followers settled in Kampong Glam. In return, the Sultan was given large areas of land for&nbsp;residential&nbsp;use in Kampong Glam under the treaty. The land was allocated to the Malays and other&nbsp;Muslim&nbsp;immigrants to Singapore, including the Malays from&nbsp;Malacca, the&nbsp;Riau&nbsp;Islands and&nbsp;Sumatra&nbsp;in Indonesia.
